Pertama, download JDK versi terbaru yang bisa kita peroleh dari  http://java.sun.com. Klik tab Download dan pilih Java SE (hal ini tergantung pengguna. Sebagai pengguna awal, disarankan pilih yang SE-Standard Edition). Dari sini akan tampil halaman web bagian Download. Klik Download JDK. Ikuti petunjuk download sampai selesai.

Kedua, agar JDK dapat bekerja, kita harus tambahkan path pada System Variables di Windows. Hal ini bisa kita lakukan dengan mengetikkan ‘Environment Variables’ pada menu Search di Control Panel. Maka akan muncul hasil: “Edit Environment Variables for your account”. Klik link ini. Sebelum kita memasukkan path baru, harus diketahui directory yang bersangkutan. Caranya: masuk Windows Explorer, Program Files, Java, jdk (tergantung versi yang diinstal), bin. Setelah masuk folder bin, copy alamat directory ini. Contoh alamat directory pada komputer saya: C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_20\bin

Window yang terbuka setelah kita klik “Edit Environment Variables for your account” di atas adalah window Environment Variables. Pada bagian bawah, ada bagian System Variables. Scroll terus ke bawah sampai ketemu ‘Path’. Klik bagian ini dan klik Edit. Masukkan directory bin yang telah kita temukan tadi dengan diawali ‘;’ (Contoh pada komputer saya: …Server\100\DTS\Binn\;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_20\bin).

Setelah hal ini dilakukan semua, kita siap untuk melakukan pemrograman dengan bahasa Java!

Langkah pertama yang saya lakukan adalah memeriksa apakah Calendar termasuk salah satu folder yang disinkronisasi.

Dari sini bisa kita lihat apakah Calendar termasuk salah satu folder yang di-sinkronisasi. Pada permasalahan saya, ternyata Calendar tidak masuk.

Hal kemudian yang saya lakukan adalah saya hapus partnership dengan hp saya dengan memilih End a Partnership. Ingat, untuk memilih opsi ini, kita harus disconnect hp dengan PC terlebih dahulu.

Kemudian saya hapus partnership yang ada dan membuat partnership dengan nama yang berbeda.

Setelah semua dilakukan, akhirnya permasalahan terselesaikan dan sekarang semua berjalan sesuai yang diharapkan.

Installation: I really love the way of installing it. It’s really easy: all you have to do is plug in  your flash disk, containing the installation data downloaded from Ubuntu, to your laptop and change your boot setting into USB (on my laptop, it only needs to press Esc once it boots. Your laptop might have a different setting). After that, just follow the instruction on the screen. Voila! As easy as that.

You can also install it side by side with your main/other operating system. Not to mention the use of Wubi (=installing Ubuntu inside Windows). All in all, it’s a really comfortable process!

Booting & Shutting down: once I successfully installed it, I measure the boot time. Shocking enough, it  takes 24 seconds to boot.It’s kinda longer than I expected. I mean, Karmic Koala takes less time than than on my laptop. Ubuntu Remix takes around 6 seconds to shut down, at about the same with Karmic Koala.

There is another downside. One thing I surely notice is that it takes quite a while to completely install it. Especially when you decide to set up a designated partition for it. Though, I think it’s quite normal considering the installation process is taking from USB.

And one more thing, I notice that it’s a bit slow on graphics, but I think it’s all because my laptop doesn’t have a top-notch graphic card. It might do better on other laptops.

Viva Ubuntu! Long Live Open Source!

After a thorough search, I gotta admit it’s pretty boring to sort out the best answer for my case, I finally resort to reinstalling Ubuntu 9.10 again. And guess what? I works just fine now. Although it’s kinda weird that the indicator on my laptop shows (when there is no application with sound needed) inactive. But it’s working all right, so I think I’m quite content with the result now.

I know that the solution I’m giving here is somewhat not favorable to you, but I guess it’s really worth the try, instead of rummaging about looking for the precise answer with a similar case. I mean, I tried that before and I’ve done (pretty much) all the people in the discussion forum suggested to do, and it brought me nowhere. So, you might wanna give it a shot.

I started using Ubuntu 9.10 by upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04. The reason I did this, instead of directly jump up to 9.10, was that when I tried installing it with my downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 from the internet, it failed every time I did (and I surely did it lots of time). Then, I finally requested an Ubuntu 9.10 CD to be sent over to my place and after around 2 weeks, it finally arrived.

When I was still using my previous Ubuntu 9.10 from the internet, I couldn’t get the wifi setting right. I was quite desperate until today that I finally tried something audacious, that is to remove it and re-install it with the CD I received from Ubuntu.

Having newly installed, I directly tried the answer that I had searched before over the internet on how to set up wifi connection in Ubuntu. Here are the steps:

1. Go under System, click on Administration

2. Choose Hardware Drivers (it instantly looks for available drivers)

3. On Hardware Drivers window, select “Broadcom B43 wireless driver” and see if it’s already activated. If it’s not, click Activate. It will start downloading and installing the driver.

Once this done, you’ll be able to see the available wireless connections under the Connection icon (the one that looks like 2 pieces of wire connected) on the right hand side of your monitor.

Now, it’s that easy. Though, it wasn’t a pleasant process I went through. So, here is what I picked up along the way:

1. In order to detect available wireless connections, make sure the necessary drivers is installed and working properly.

2. There are several other ways to get round the problem, such as installing Ndiswrapper which you can follow from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper. Though, I really have to say that it’s not fun at all. There are too many rooms for error.

PS: FYI, my laptop is HP Pavilion tx1000 and using Broadcom B4312 wireless card.
